How to Become a Peer Tutor
Qualifications | Application Process | Training
Qualifications
The College's Peer Tutoring Program employs only current Northeastern University undergraduate students based on their academic achievement and/or expertise in subject(s) which they plan to tutor. Students typically must have received a final grade of an A- or A, have an overall GPA of 3.0, and come highly recommended by the faculty member of the course in which they plan to tutor. Students who would like to tutor must be dependable, have excellent communication skills, an interest in working in one-on-one or in small groups, and a solid command of the course material.
Application Process
Qualified candidates are invited to complete an application accompanied by two evaluations, one from the faculty member of the course in which the student would like to tutor and the other from the student's academic advisor. All prospective peer tutors are interviewed by the program director. Peer tutor positions are posted on the Northeastern University Student Employment Website which details pay rates. Qualified students should apply via that website as well.
Training
The Arts and Sciences Peer Tutoring Program offers three levels of peer tutor training in accordance to CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) guidelines: CRLA Level 1, CRLA Advanced Level 2, and CRLA Master Tutor. In addition, tutors attend lectures on topics related to their training. In addition, tutors have an opportunity to attend local conferences on tutoring, where they may have a chance to present a paper on a topic in which they are interested.
